Weekend Fitness Tips | 9/30 Edition

Welcome to the weekend. Here are some weekend fitness tips to read through while you’re relaxing. Enjoy and get out there and enjoy life.

12 Most Motivating Reasons To Work Out

I particularly laughed at tip #6.

6. It’s cheaper than anti-depressants.

Which reason did you like best?

Goal Characteristics For Success

Most of us long to succeed at the things we engage in and goals are a common part of cube-dweller lingo. This article pulls goals apart, searching for characteristics of goals that drive us towards success.

In a meta analysis by Locke et al 99 of 110 studies showed that proximal, specific, difficult yet attainable goals resulted in higher task performance compared with ‘no goal’ or ‘easy goals’.

Stretch goals are better. Do you set good goals?

How Exercise Can Strengthen the Brain

Exercise can actually grow the brain; well at least it spurs the birth of new mitochondria.

This upsurge in mitochondria, in turn, has been linked not only to improvements in exercise endurance but to increased longevity in animals and reduced risk for obesity, diabetes and heart disease in people. It is a very potent cellular reaction.

Revitalized brain cells also, at least potentially, could reduce mental fatigue and sharpen your thinking even when you’re not exercising

Train your brain – get out there and exercise regularly.

Over 40? Be happier with moderate exercise

Don’t become more sedentary – don’t worry, be happy. Recent research on middle aged women says that moderate exercise may be the key to happiness.

The study found that moderate intensity exercise caused more women to report later that they were in a better mood and to have greater feelings of energy, psychological wellbeing and “self-efficacy.”

The Future of Fitness and Health

Tech-gadgets are everywhere. Technology is making its way into more and more areas of our lives and most of the time without us really thinking about it. This is an interesting article exploring what could be ahead when we start mixing fitness and technology.

According to Jacobs, about 2-3 years into the future, you won’t be hitting a button to track anything, it will be automatic. You take a sip of water and the system knows. Data collection will be passive, unobtrusive and free. All the intelligence will be ‘under the hood.’ Taking care of your health will be like listening to turn by turn TomTom directions. “Time to wake up. Drink a glass of water. Time to sleep. You’re done working out. You ate a donut. Redirecting.”

Have a great weekend. Share your thoughts on these tips, or leave comments with articles you’ve seen this week.
