What do you do when you are improving, then just get stuck? Could be you just can’t seem to do a single pull-up. Could be that you can’t run more than 2 miles? Could be just about anything? Those limits, or plateaus, can be frustrating.
Well bust through those plateaus with these six tips.
Six Tips to Get Past Plateaus
There is more detail from Brett & Kate McKay over at Art of Manliness. Their recent post on Plateau Busting gives some background on where plateaus come from and how to bust through them. Head over there to read the full-post it has some great information.
Their research revealed six tips to get past plateaus:
- Take Risks
- Embrace the Suck
- Step out of the Echo Chamber
- Practice Deliberately
- Get Back to the Basics
- Think Long Term
So next time you find yourself stuck in a rut and need to bust through a plateau give these a go.
For me the biggest tip is to Practice Deliberately. My old-man mind can envision tricks I want to do on a snowboard, but the body is often lagging to perform. But when I take the time to deliberately break the moves down, think through each step and force my body to respond, I make progress. I can nail an ollie front-side 360; this season I’m be working on the ollie back-side 360.
What’s worked for you? Where have you experienced plateaus and what specific steps have helped you bust through to the next level?
