Joining Toms Shoes to raise awareness of poverty and the number of people that live without shoes. Today is One Day Without Shoes. I am a Cube Dweller and today, I am not wearing shoes.
Why No Shoes
We are spoiled in so many ways as we live as Cube Dwellers. It is easy to become desensitized to the world around us and think that everyone is stressed about spreadsheets, web pages, proposals, deadlines, and keeping in shape. The reality is millions of people live without.
Just going barefoot isn’t really enough, because for many of us that is just a reminder of wonderful summer days. Barefoot living exposes people living in developing and underdeveloped countries to risk of injury and disease. Going barefoot in spring should be a reminder how much we have; and how we can make a difference in the world.
Here is a quote from Black Mycoskie, the founder of TOMS Shoes writing about One Day Without Shoes:
For hundreds of millions of children, shoes are a luxury that they simply cannot afford. In many developing countries, children walk barefoot for miles risking injury, infection and exposure to soil-transmitted diseases. Many schools require shoes for attendance, giving children without them no opportunity to learn. And some soil-based diseases not only cause physical symptoms, but create cognitive impairment too, crippling a child’s long-term potential. I’ve seen this with my own eyes in Argentina, Ethiopia and South Africa, and TOMS’ giving partners experience this everyday in 20+ international countries.
If you haven’t already, take ’em off. Go One Day Without Shoes to help raise awareness.
