Tips 9 and 10 from the list of recommendations to reduce my cholesterol numbers. This week’s tip looks at flavonoids and nuts.
Flavonoid
The name sounds like something straight out of a Marvel comic book. But flavonoids are the source of the old saying that a glass of red wine a day is good for you. Red wine’s benefits have been attributed to the flavonoids that it contains. But keep reading.
Pomegranate juice is better than red wine. The pure juice from pomegranates is loaded with flavonoids. The research suggests that drinking one glass of pomegranate juice per day lowers LDL cholsterol and increases HDL cholesterol. Both great side-effects.
The challenge is finding pure pomegranate juice. Most of the juice on the shelves at stores may say it is pomegranate juice, but after looking closer they are mostly apple or grape juice with some pomegranate added.
Search to find juice that is 100 percent pomegranate juice.
Nuts
When you need a snack during the day grab a handful, just one handful, of nuts. Not only are nuts a great low-glycemic snack, but they help to reduce cholesterol numbers. Take a look at the results from a study done at from Loma Linda University in California via WebMD – Eating Nuts Daily Lowers Cholesterol. The study had 583 people eat 2.4 oz of nuts daily.
This dietary practice resulted in an average 5.1% reduction in total cholesterol concentration, a 7.4% reduction in LDL or bad cholesterol, and an 8.3% reduction in the ratio of LDL to HDL (“good” cholesterol) levels.
In addition, triglyceride measurements declined by 10.2%, but only among people with initially elevated triglyceride readings.
Which nuts? The two nuts that top the lists for helping reduce cholesterol are walnuts and almonds.
So to improve your cholesterol numbers have some pomegranate juice and nuts every day.
