Today’s workout … wasn’t.
There are days when something happens and the workout just doesn’t go well. Today was one of those days. I’ve learned that I just need to listen to my body. Recall that I’m a Cube Dweller, not a professional athlete. The risk of pushing through possible injury outweighs the reality that I need to be able to go in to work. So I back off.
So what happened this morning? Not quite sure. I was on my last day of the German Volume Training program (GVT series). The workout consisted of 10 sets of 10 double kettlebell military press and pull ups, followed by 3 sets of 10 turkish get ups (TGU). I managed to add more weight to the presses and nail 10 reps on the first two sets, then sustain 8 reps for the rest of the sets. I got nailed by the pullups.
When I started onto the third set of pullups I knew something wasn’t right. I had done 13 for the first two sets. On the third I had to drop off after about 7. My left wrist wasn’t happy and my grip was already complaining. Either that or my body was still off from the shift in daylight savings time – sure I’ll blame it on the DST shift, that’s it.
Either way I backed off. Instead I did a few sets of cleans, then a little ab work. GVT day 12 turned into a light day.
What do you do when you have the workout that wasn’t?
