Whey Protein Gut Bomb – oh my aching stomach

Whey Protein

We got a box of Weider Quick2Sip Whey Protein Singles. I’ve wondered about whey protein so I was excited to give them a try. The result … gut bomb!

I’m a gluton for punishment so I had to try it more than once. The reaction was identical, tasted good, then Ca-POW my stomach started to ache. The sensation felt like my stomach was literally about to explode.

So I started to wonder if this was just me, or if this was a common side-effect of whey protein. A quick search revealed that it isn’t just me, but somethings still left me puzzled.

Some said, “switch to whey protein isolate” and your problems will go away. Hmmm.

Check the ingredients:

Whey protein isolate, natural flavor, fructooligosaccharides, citric acid, fructose, malic acid, red beet juice added for color, stevia leaf extract, fungal amylase, acid protease, fungal protease, lactase, pea protein isolate, citrus extract, beta-carotene added for color.
Contains milk.

Well that suggestion didn’t fit since the first ingredient is whey protein isolate. That left me with two other options:

  1. I didn’t drink enough water
  2. I’m lactose intolerance

Water, well maybe but both times I tried this product I had consumed a glass of water before and after consuming the product. That’s a lot of water in a period of roughly 30 minutes. Still did my body need more water to digest the whey protein? I don’t know. It is possible, but I don’t think so.

Lactose intolerance is a more likely candidate. I’ve noticed that my body doesn’t like a morning breakfast of milk and cereal. Odd since that was a staple for much of my youth; every morning with Cherios, or Life cereal.

Well independent of the cause I’ve come to a conclusion. I’ll need to find source of protein elsewhere. I will not be using Weider Quick2Sip whey protein any more – two gut bombs in two days is plenty for me, thanks.

Besides what on earth is an fructooligosaccharide?

Anyone?
