Push Up Variations | Workout For Fitness

Pushups are an incredible workout in themselves. I’ve had a few people ask me about how they can vary pushups.

Medicine Ball Push Up Variations

When you workout for fitness with push up variations one great way to add some variety is with medicine balls. They use a fairly standard push up position, but adds variety with height. Using a medicine ball to add some height differences. If you don’t have a medicine ball, just about any type of ball will do. The variations go from a standard push up to elevating one, or both arms, on a ball. Theses medicine ball push up variations include:

  • Dual Medicine Ball Push Ups – elevate both hands on a medicine ball.
  • Single Medicine Ball Push Up – place both hands on a single medicine ball.
  • Alternating Single Medicine Ball Push Ups – with a wide stance alternate putting one ball from one hand to the other every few reps

Here is a video that shows these variations with a medicine ball:

Standard Push Up Variations

Some standard variations include changing your hand or leg stance and moving to explosive movements. This video demonstrates three standard push up variations:

  • Hand Stance Variations
  • One Leg Push Ups
  • Clapping Push Ups

Extreme Explosive Push Ups

This next video goes on to show explosive push up variations. There are so many ways to continue to workout for fitness by only using different push up variations. Start thinking about the variations I’ve shown so far, then continue to think about different hand positions, heights, and how you could get creative. The amount of variations are nearly limitless.

I searched and searched on YouTube to see what extreme explosive push up variations I could find. It took me a while, but then I found Nixa Zizu. As you watch the following video remember that this guy uses bodyweight training, like that used in Turbulence Training. Bodyweight can be a very effective way to workout for fitness. You don’t need heavy weights, access to lots of equipment.

Check out these extreme explosive push up variations:

Extreme Park Push Ups

To stick with the bodyweight focus I found two videos of extreme park push up variations. These guys also focus a lot of their work on bodyweight exercises like Craig Ballantyne’s TT workouts.

These videos show extreme positions, explosive movements, and extremely high repetitions. I love the spin push ups – watch for them.

Push Up Variations

There are so many ways workout for fitness by using push ups. Change your hand stance, add some height variation, or keep pushing to some explosive moves. Any way to you add some variety is key – keep fitness fun, then you’ll stay engaged and keep improving.

Let me know if you’ve tired these, or if I missed your favorite push up variations.
